Flat plans of my music magazine

This is how I plan to set out my music magazine. However, I may have to change some parts to fit in with the photography or to fill in any gaps which may have been left.

Ideology

An ideology is a world view, a big overall way of looking at things.  It is a system of values, attitudes and beliefs and a set of ideas which an individual, group or society holds to be true or important.
Identity is something that seperates people from one another. It can mean our values, expereiences, emotions, skills, passions and also many other things. Been in a 'social group' gives someone an identity wheter it is true or not.
Values are important, it shows what a person believes in. In the magazine/news paper industry almost everything is written with some value.

What is the difference between values and ideology?
Simply put we have values and they have an ideology. Ideology tends to be a term that is aimed at those whose peoples values differ from our own, it is a pejorative term.

Kerrang! readership information

Kerrang! was a magazine that was first published in 1981 and was devoted to british heavy metal and the rise of hard rock music. It was first launched as a monthly magazine, but then due to the high demand of it, it became a magazine to be published weekly. During the 1980s and early 1990s the magazine placed many thrash and glam metal acts on the cover slike Bon Jovi, but later discarded them when grunge acts such as Nirvana rose to fame. Readers started to criticise Kerrang! for chaning it's style every time a new music genre became more popular. However, Kerrang! became popular again when nu-metal bands such as Linkin park rose to fame, but this genre did not last long and sales declined. Many readers welcomed the come back of Kerrang! with a new focus of emo and metalcore music.
The magazine appeals to a specific niche audience because it concerns topics and themes that are relevant to people who listen to and are interested by rock music and its background.
Kerrang! identifies its audience as ‘individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty’
This devoted audience of rock fans is made up of 60% males and 40% females with Kerrang!s demographic fall into social class D-C. The predominate ethnicity of the readership is white British with a target population of 16-24 year olds. The magazine’s psychographic is defined as ‘people who aspire to be respected among other people and people who wish to have a high paid job.’ It is evident that the magazine is aimed at a young audience, through the use of graphics, fonts, layouts and presentation. Kerrang! is aimed at the youth and their lifestyles. It has a contemporary and up-to-date look, making use of modern typefaces and a down-to-earth feel. The magazine even accommodates the young readership by using advertisements that relate to their interests. Kerrang! aims itself more at a male audience and appeals to them by using content such as hard rock and metal iconic male bands on the front cover pulling angry faces or violent expressions. Female readers are targeted by the use of male bands on free pull out posters and feature interviews.

My college magazine

^^^ They are the images that I am considering using in my college magazine. I might not use all of these images and some may not suit the sytle of the magazine.
On the front cover of my magazine, I will have a title with an image that will take up the whole page. However, I will use photoshop to add other images so that they on top of the main image.
In my contents page I will list what I would have intended to put in the magaszine, with extra images. The contents will include, a page about films and a page about music, there will also be a page about fashion, I may also add a questionaire and a 'chance to win something' competititon.
The techniques that I have maily used are close up or medium close up shots.

Analysing the questionaire

From the questionnaire that I created, many conclusions can be drawn from this. I have discovered that the people I questioned enjoyed listening to mostly to rock and indie music, and sometimes pop or rap. Also, they would rate them self as middle class who mainly like being with a small group of friends. They say that they are slightly influenced by the media and people that are older than them, and would rather watch a film or listen to music than to read a book. They have hobbies which mainly include being with their friends, or listening to some music. Also, they say that their characteristics are “kind, happy, fun, bubbly, friendly and helpful.” Some people were not as interested in t.v or reading books as they were at listening to music, however I think that it would be better to put films, t.v shows, books and music into the college magazine as this is more likely going to attract more people as it suits a wider range of people. The people I questioned were slightly interested in fashion, but not too much.

media questionaire

1. Are you male or female?
2. What kind of music do you like? (pop/rock/indie/rap/metal/other)
3. What is your nationality?
4. Describe yourself in 3 words?
5. Would you rate yourself as upper/lower/middles class?
6. How would you describe your lifestyle?
7. What are your fashion interests?
8. Do you prefer being in a small group of friends, being the centre of attention or being by yourself?
9. Would you say that you are influenced by the media?
10. What are your hobbies?
11. What do your parents work as?
12. What do you aspire to be?
13. Do you feel driven by the need to succeed?
14. Would you like to go to university?
15. Are you concerned about the environment?
16. Who are you influenced by?
17. Are you interested in any specific t.v show?
18. How do you like to socialise?
19. What magazines do you like to read?
20. Do you prefer to read a book, listen to music or watch a film?

I chose these questions becuase I thought they would give me the answers that I needed to create the college magazine. The theories I used for selecting these questions we're that they gave me ideas as to what people would like to see in a magazine and what the enjoyed.
When I was creating my questionaire I had a question which was "How old are you?" however, I later decided that this was not a very useful question as all the people I would be asking are college students aged between 16-18. I replaced this question with "Do you prefer to read a book, listen to music or watch a film?" because I thought that this would give me information on a persons interests.

Experimenting with a camera

For this photoshoot i used a range of different techniques such as high and low angled shots. A shot with juxtaposed objects, which shows contrast within an image. Also thinking about the rule of thirds of important when considering taking a shot so we used this in our images.

First post.

This is the first blog of my music magazine coursework project. Over the course of this blog I will show you how I have been building up ideas for my music magazine.
I am particually interested in such bands and artists as: You me at six, All time low, Fall out boy, Paramore and Katy Perry.
The most natural choise of magazine for me to study is Kerrang.
Kerrang is a magazine for 'rock, goth, metal, punk, thrash, classic indie and unsigned bands'
